What are the four silent symptoms of a heart attack in women?
- Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
- Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.
- Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
As with men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain or discomfort. But it’s important to note that women are more likely to experience the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
Go Red For Women Luncheon is an annual campaign created by the American Heart Association to educate the public, especially women, that heart disease is the #1 killer of women every single year, more than all the cancers combined. Visit www.goredforwomen.org for more information and how you can take charge of your heart health and not become a statistic.
More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, heart disease is often hidden and misunderstood. Go Red for Women brings attention to the effects of heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is not just a man’s disease. Each year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. Eighty percent of cardiac events can be prevented. Funds raised at the Go Red for Women luncheons fund research specifically geared towards women, education and legislative advocacy programs.
More than 275 women’s lives have been saved each day since Go Red for Women’s birth in 2004. Currently, some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believes that heart disease is a serious health threat. Sadly, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
