A group of 4 brown pelicans (2 adults and 2 juveniles) was released by the Wildlife Rehab & Educational Center of Houston on Sat Feb 22. I attended along with scores of others folks and some news agents. It was a gorgeous day on Galveston Bay right behind the Kemah Boardwalk.
The group included a pelican found sheltering on the 5th floor of a highrise in Houston, another one was found at the Kemah/Seabrook Home Depot and the other two were found in the Galveston area after this January’s hard freeze (one of them actually had frostbite). For more info on the individual pelican stories, please visit the WRE website http://www.wrande.org under the blog heading. You may also find the WRE on facebook – search for Wildlife Rehab and Education.
All four of the brown pelicans were emaciated and debilitated due to parasites and the freezing temperatures. The Wildlife Center medicated and fed these animals for over four weeks. It cost over $1000 in fish to bring these animals back to good health. If you would like to contribute to their care please go to the website www.wrande.org and click the DONATE button on the top bar.
